Leon Trotsky: On the answer of the English Section

[Letter to the IS, my own translation of the German text, typewritten copy in Lev Davidovič Trockij / International Left Opposition Archives, inventory number 1006, International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam].

I was only able to take a very cursory look at the document. It is, predictably, based entirely on the alleged expulsion of the English section from the International League. I don’t think it’s worth prolonging the polemic any further. The most sensible thing, it seems to me, would be to answer roughly as follows;

a) On the political question itself, the IS has nothing to add to what has already been said.

b) It is absolutely wrong that the organisational proposal of the IS is an exclusion of the English section. Such an interpretation is arbitrary and unfounded. However, the IS does not want to declare the minority outside the League either, and this excludes the possibility of recognising the majority as the only and fully entitled section.

c) This decision, or rather this proposal, was only of a provisional nature until the situation clarifies and crystallises.

d) The matter will be decided at the next plenary session,

e) If the leadership of the majority can send a representative to Paris to come to an understanding with the IS now, the IS would only welcome this.
